She also had many wonderful nieces, nephews and friends that supported her in her later years. She is survived by her son Paul (Lorraine) and grandchildren Lexie and Ethan. Gladys is preceded in death by her parents, husband Buiford, brothers Axel, John, Gunnar and Orville and sister Elvira. Gladys very much enjoyed spending time with her bible study and coffee klatch friends who also helped her stay active and were very important to her. She and Buiford were very involved with the Gideons International and Gladys participated in the Gideons Auxiliary women’s jail ministry in Beltrami County. Gladys always put her faith first and was an active member of First Lutheran Church. She worked there until her retirement when she frequently traveled to North Carolina to visit Paul’s family and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. As Paul grew older, Gladys went back to work, this time, with the DNR and had a 20 plus year career with the Fisheries and Waters departments. They had one son, Paul and enjoyed living and working on the farm. Gladys and Buiford were married in 1962 and happily made their home on the Qualle farmstead East of Bemidji in Frohn township. She joined the First Lutheran Church choir in Bemidji and people noticed how the young redhead was attempting to get the attention of Buiford Qualle who also sang in the choir. When Gladys turned 15 years old, the family spent the Summer in the Alborg area of Denmark and lived with many Danish cousins who she kept in contact with and visited again in 2018.Īfter graduating from Bemidji High School, Gladys spent some time at Concordia College in Moorhead but ultimately came back to Bemidji and worked at Northern National Bank. When the youngest siblings were of high school age, the parents moved with Gladys, her sister Elvira and brother Orville to a small farm West of Bemidji where the Super 8 and Starbucks are now located. Gladys had many fond memories which included having homemade ice cream once a year on her birthday, made from ice cut from under the haystacks. The blizzard was severe, and part of the family were taken in by strangers along the way who gave them food and shelter for many days. At the onset of the depression, when Gladys was two years old, her family moved during a blizzard to Clearwater County just South of Ebro where the Sorensen family farm was established. Gladys was born in Irene, SD, January 16, 1934, to Jens Johan and Ane Johana Sorensen. Inurnment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Bemidji. They’re great at mimicry and bad at facts. They work by looking for patterns in huge troves of text and then using those patterns to guess what the next word in a string of words should be. The paper’s official title is “Climbing Towards NLU: On Meaning, Form, and Understanding in the Age of Data.” NLU stands for “natural-language understanding.” How should we interpret the natural-sounding (i.e., humanlike) words that come out of LLMs? The models are built on statistics. No way to give relevant instructions, like to go grab some coconuts and rope and build a catapult. How could it succeed? The octopus has no referents, no idea what bears or sticks are. I’ve got some sticks.” The octopus, impersonating B, fails to help. Then one day A calls out: “I’m being attacked by an angry bear. This ruse works for a while, and A believes that O communicates as both she and B do - with meaning and intent. Soon, the octopus enters the conversation and starts impersonating B and replying to A. Over time, O learns to predict with great accuracy how B will respond to each of A’s utterances. O knows nothing about English initially but is very good at detecting statistical patterns. Meanwhile, O, a hyperintelligent deep-sea octopus who is unable to visit or observe the two islands, discovers a way to tap into the underwater cable and listen in on A and B’s conversations. A and B start happily typing messages to each other. They soon discover that previous visitors to these islands have left behind telegraphs and that they can communicate with each other via an underwater cable. Say that A and B, both fluent speakers of English, are independently stranded on two uninhabited islands. Free graphic designer (Raster based/ Photoshop alternatives) We’ll also add a brief paragraph about what we liked about the specific program. All the programs mentioned in the list are free. I’ll include some supplementary articles to help you get the distinction between raster and vector. This is because raster graphics editors and vector graphics editors are very different with different learning processes. The list includes both raster and vector software and both will be presented separately. So we decided to make a list of free software for graphic design. But both of these are expensive and it could be challenging for a budding digital artist to get access to Adobe’s Creative Cloud. When it comes to graphics designers, Photoshop and Illustrator are the ones dominating the raster and vector department of graphic designing. And with the digitization of art, the choices of the digital canvas have increased and today, there is no lack of a great, free graphics designer. Offline Document Security Products and Services The Boeing Company is looking for a High Fidelity Digital Twin Software Integration Engineer (Mid-Level and Senior) to join our team. We’re committed to fostering an environment for every teammate that’s welcoming, respectful and inclusive, with great opportunity for professional growth. From the seabed to outer space, you can contribute to work that matters with a company where diversity, equity and inclusion are shared values. Unlike underground or podium parking (both of which are excluded from PRN’s analyses because they cannot be easily converted or redeveloped), surface lots can become places of play, retail, worship, dining, and anything other than car storage. At Boeing, we innovate and collaborate to make the world a better place. “Our research indicates that the percentage of land taken up by parking decreases as the percentage of individuals who opt for public transportation, walking, or biking as their primary commuting methods increases,” PRN wrote on the Parking Lot Map page, adding, “This revelation underscores a clear truth: to foster densely walkable cities, we must prioritize accessibility over excessive parking.”įor cities already confronting how parking has interfered with affordability, housing production, and even compliance with municipal comprehensive plans, looking toward surface lots as places of opportunity is a good next step. Unsurprisingly for parking reform advocates, the answer to that very question lies in less parking. Countless images of half-empty lots offer a cheeky retort to the question: “ But where will I park?” Strong Towns has long lampooned the expanses of asphalt on the busiest shopping day of the year with its #BlackFridayParking campaign. Like in Tampa, many of these lots fail to fill up, even during peak hours. On average, PRN found that 22% of all land in city centers of metropolitan areas with over a million people was dedicated solely to parking. Additionally, city staff, no longer burdened by variance requests, can focus on the city’s more urgent needs. The hope now is that homeowners, retailers, and developers can not only more flexibly tailor their space to their needs, but that underutilized parking lots can eventually become structures the people of Willmar can appreciate. “Generally speaking, if you have that many variance requests around a single ordinance, you should change the ordinance,” Justice Walker, the city’s planning and development director, says. The formula was so unpopular that waiving the requirement for parking was Willmar’s most requested petition. Formerly, the minimum number of parking spots required was based on the square footage of a property, regardless of the property’s use and the owner or developer’s preferences. Willmar - a city of approximately 20,000 in the middle of Minnesota - recently eliminated its parking mandates, in part because people wanted less parking. She was the lone opposition to a 90-foot 926-car parking garage ultimately approved for a site formerly envisioned for transit expansion. “We are embedding, in a way, a continuation of the auto-oriented systems that we have been trying for a long time to work through,” says Brenda Scheer, a member of the city’s Planning Commission. A survey of the city’s central and business districts revealed 6,000 of the 24,000 available spaces were unused during peak hours.Įlsewhere, like in Salt Lake City, 29% of which is parking lots according to PRN, prioritizing parking has inhibited the expansion of the city’s public transportation network, according to some advocates. Furthermore, the parking that does exist is underutilized. In fact, twice as much land is used for parking lots as for greenspace in Tampa, a ratio the city’s planners are eager to flip. “We’re wasting a lot of space, especially with the housing crisis.” “We have parking instead of people space,” Karen Kress, senior director of transportation and planning at the Tampa Downtown Partnership, told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay. To connect to the server use the command: On the client machine, first install a VNC client such as xtightvncviewer. Port 5901 is VNC connection port, 6001 is X server for VNC. We can check the VNCserver is running by issuing the netstat -tupln command: tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:5901 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN Xtightvnc Thats when you realize VNC sessions are not linked to Linux user authentication but relies on a single password (one of VNC insecurity problems)! You can later change that password using the vncpasswd command. The first time you run vncserver, it prompts for a password (8 char max). We started an X session on display port 1, note that by default vncserver will attempt to start on display 0 which is already taken by the started Kali session used for local access We will make a first run of VncServer to generate configuration files and VNC password. Install Autocutsel package to enable cut&paste between client and server:Īpt-get install autocutsel II.2 First run The host keys must be changed by running:Īlso you should use certificate authentication for SSH or at least change the default password (toor) for the Kali root user. Warning: As stated by Kali Official Documentation all Kali Arm images are configured with the same SSH host key. I used Xubuntu as the client OS but any other are possible provided they support SSH tunneling and you can install a VNC client. The Raspberry Pi will act as SSH and VNC server. SSH server must be available and running on the Raspberry Pi. The device must be connected to the Internet to install the required packages and be network accessible to the PC or phone where you install the VNC client. For that look at instruction on the Kali Official Documentation I personally installed Kali 2 on Raspberry Pi 3. Prerequisitesįirst you need to have a running Kali or other Debian based Linux distribution installed on Raspberry PI. I wanted to install VNC and I found it quite complicated to get the information I needed to be able to do so in a secure and nice way. I wrote this how-to because I lastly decided to install and run Kali Linux from a Raspberry Pi. This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. When I then learned that Rufino Tamayo worked at his family's fruit stand in his youth, a mezcal margarita made with seasonal fruit was a no-brainer. These two works made me think about the region and the trajectory of the fruits depicted in the painting, including the history of mezcal. Man with Tall Hat (featured in the exhibition Rufino Tamayo: Innovation and Experimentation) even depicts a typical hat from the Isthmus of Tehuantepec region of Oaxaca, while the stacked homes in the background allude to Cubist landscapes. I was particularly drawn to Woman with Fruit Basket (Mujer con canasta de frutas) and Man with Tall Hat (Hombre con sombrero alto) because both paintings reminded me of the colors and textures seen all over Oaxaca. Watch the video to learn step-by-step how to make a refreshing Mango-Pineapple Mezcal Margarita!Ĭan you share more about the artworks that inspired the margarita? As a culinary historian, can you explain the history of the ingredients? Given that mezcal was first made in Oaxaca, a simple summery cocktail made with seasonal fruit seemed appropriate. I wanted to make something specific to his native Oaxaca and give a nod to the region's rich culinary history. One of Mexico's renowned artists of the 20th century, Rufino Tamayo (1899–1991) drew from various influences in his work, from Mesoamerican art to the European avant-garde. Why did you decide to make a Mango-Pineapple Mezcal Margarita in response to works by Rufino Tamayo? Most recently I've shifted gears and have been "cooking art history" through online cooking classes and videos. I do this through lectures, cooking classes, dinners, and tastings at museums across the country (including the Cur-ATE dinner series at LACMA which began in 2012). In 2007, I founded ArtBites: Cooking Art History and have been exploring the nexus of art and culinary history ever since. Make sure to stock up on lots of ice, and don’t be afraid to get creative. They do take a bit more work, but a frozen margarita is also pretty party perfect. Most of these recipes can even be prepared ahead of time, making them a party-ready cocktail in minutes. One of our favorite things about margs? They’re quick and easy to whip up for a crowd, and are super simple to double (or triple) to serve bashes large and small. Our peach margaritas, our pineapple margaritas, our blueberry lemonade margaritas, or our salted & spiced watermelon margs are the perfect fruity, boozy treat on hot summer days. While we love a classic margarita (starring lime, tequila, and triple sec), we’re also obsessed with fun, creative versions of the cocktail featuring alternative fruits. Looking for something extra special? Try our top-shelf Cadillac margarita. Looking for something a little lighter? Try our "skinny" margaritas. What makes these margarita recipes the best?
